2021: New Year, New Belief that’s what I’m thinking. It’s not my New Year’s resolution but my intention. While many of you look toward the New Year with excitement and hope, a fresh page full of possibilities, and a let’s get this party started attitude, I’m not one of you.

To be open and honest, I typically enter the new year full of anxiety and dread. I look ahead and think another year is about to pass me by. I’m not sure when I started feeling this way but certainly for the last 10 years.

Sounds terrible, right? I know. So, I would like to change that. Easy to say, much harder to do. But the truth is this mindset is not serving me.

I think the place to start with any change is to understand why. Where did this feeling come from? I’m a New Year’s baby. I mean, I was not born on New Year’s Day but close to it, January 5th. When I was young, I liked having a birthday early in the year. I was always the oldest kid in my class which was a boost for me because I was also the smallest. My advanced age made up for my small stature.

But as I got older that all changed. I no longer wanted to be the oldest. So, as each year winds down, I think about getting a year older. And, as you know, the years keep flying by even when we’re in a pandemic and stuck at home.

I also think the feeling of dread comes from my cancer diagnosis 10 years ago. I started my first chemotherapy treatment on December 29th. The anxiety and fear of the unknown and what lay ahead was terrifying and overwhelming.

My friend, Megan O’Neill, who is a Conscious Mindset Coach specializing in core belief engineering, says first we need to recognize we have an entrenched belief and understand where it comes from. Often it comes from our childhood. Then we can make the conscious effort to change that outdated belief. That could mean faking it for a while, while we look for evidence and start to really believe.

So, I’m telling myself I’m a person who gets excited by the start of a new year and the endless possibilities that await me.

As for evidence, I just hosted a special coffee shop with many of you who are devoted COKANNA customers to get your input and feedback on upcoming designs for this year. Your enthusiasm has further fuelled my desire to upgrade my old ‘New Year’ mindset.

Timing is everything. To help my fledgling belief system along, this week’s guest in the Coffee Shop is Business & Life Coach, Megan Tong. She’ll be presenting, “2021 The Year Your Life Changes Forever” on Friday, January 15th at 11:00 am. In this session, we’ll talk about our dreams for 2021. And then we’ll talk about how to finally make them happen. Let’s get this party started!
