Connecting with customers during a lockdown is challenging. These days I’m relying heavily on social media and zoom. I’m always in a tug-of-war: trying to be mindful of the amount of time I spend onscreen; and being actively engaged on Facebook and Instagram. And then, without even trying, a customer reaches out to me.
An unexpected call
It was a bright spot in my day a couple of weeks ago. An out-of-the-blue phone call from a new customer. I was right in the middle of doing a mini photoshoot with my phone. I was taking pictures of the new hoodie I’m working on. Check it out: A New Hoodie in the Works. My phone was attached to a tripod and I was tempted to let it go to voicemail, but something made me pick up.
It was a lovely young woman from Kingston calling about my clothes. Amanda had seen COKANNA on social and had a few questions. We chatted for a bit and both enjoyed the human connection if only by voice. She was surprised she actually got me, the designer. And, I was grateful to connect with and get to know a new customer.
Ordering online
Amanda told me she doesn’t usually order online because of sizing so I helped her pick her size. I assured her if it didn’t fit, I would gladly exchange it and pay for the return shipping.
We laughed about how her brother and my daughter will order a bunch of clothes and then return half of them. Not our way of shopping. She wants to support Canadian businesses, shop local, and know where her clothes are coming from.
Helpful feedback
She also brought to my attention an error on my website. I was playing around with some things and somehow it turned the word “Size” on the drop down menu to “Attribute”. She wanted to make sure that it was indeed the size. That’s what happens when you wear all the hats in your business including web designer and you’re not a programmer. Error corrected. Much appreciated.
Jumping for joy
Shortly after our call, Amanda ordered the Silky Blue Carolyn dress. She loves that its bamboo and has pockets. She sent me this lovely message: “Thank you so much for your personal touch on my order, Colleen. The dress came in and it is absolutely stunning! How wonderful it is to find a local designer that cares for sustainability as you do! So happy that my search led me to you. I’ve also mentioned it to our local shop and of course continue to share your site with friends”.

Amanda jumping for joy in the Silky Blue Carolyn dress
Wow, I love seeing both Amanda and the dress in motion! And, I’m filled with gratitude for the word of mouth support. It’s the best way to create awareness for my brand and grow organically. Thank you, Amanda!
Women supporting women
Once again, this is another example of women supporting women and making conscious buying decisions. It fills me with the knowing that a more thoughtful, other-focused world is on the rise.
Btw, if you ever notice an error, even a typo, on my website, I would so appreciate a heads up…really!
P.S. Keep an eye out this week for another Kanbassador opportunity to be a tester. This time I’m looking for a Size 4(XL).
Until next time,
~ Colleen
