It’s the perfect time for transitional dressing while the weather is sorting itself out. The transition from winter to spring is a welcome one especially here in Canada. But, it can also come with confusion over what to wear.
Fluctuations in temperature are the norm at this time of year. It’s warm and sunny one day, and cool and rainy the next, not to mention the lingering snow flurries. Even within the same day, it can be frosty in the morning, summer-like by the afternoon and chilly again in the evening.
The first question is when do I change my snow tires? And the second is what do I wear? We’re asking ourselves: Can I put away my heavy coats and boots yet? Will I be cold in a lighter-weight jacket or sweater? Is it too early to break out the sandals? Can I wear white?
If you’re like me, you’re tired of the dark, heavy clothes you’ve been wearing all winter. Even more so this year being cooped up at home. It’s time to come out of hibernation, get vaccinated, keep our masks on and socially distance.
Here are 4 transitional dressing ideas to help you figure out what to wear:
Colour
Lighten up and brighten up! Nothing says welcome to spring like Easter egg colours. The lighter and brighter colours can’t help but put a smile on your face and a spring in your step.
Old with New
Treat yourself to a new spring/summer dress like the Carolyn that can double as a jumper over a tried and true favourite top already hanging in your closet. This one is a simple Eileen Fisher top I purchased years ago.

Silky blue Carolyn reversible dress with pockets over a simple mauve top, accessorized with a pearl rope necklace from Stunning, multi-coloured scarf, and funky blue shoes.
For a casual and fun look, pair an old faded jean jacket (this one is borrowed from my daughter’s closet) with the fiery fuchsia Carolyn dress.

Contrast
Is it too early to wear white? Absolutely not. Not head-to-toe white but touches of white. Black + White makes a fresh bold stepping-into-spring statement. It’s contrast and balance at the same time. And it’s so easy to wear. Check out these looks.

Midnight black Carolyn dress over a simple white 3/4 sleeve tee. Tights and ankle boots keep you warm. B+W animal print scarf from Wanderlust Scarves adds interest.

Maxine reversible tank and Lynne leggings in black with white sneakers. The same pearls from Stunning can be worn as a necklace or a belt. Layer a jacket overtop for warmth.
Layers
Don’t pack up your heavier weight sweaters just yet. Throw one on over the Carolyn dress in the morning to keep you warm, then peel it off as the temperature rises throughout the day. Back on again when the sun goes down.

If you have a lighter-weight spring coat, now’s the time to bring it out. The season is short so wear it while you can. This full-length double-breasted coat looks striking over the silky blue Carolyn dress. A black turtleneck and tights add warmth, and a scarf and pendant necklace finish off the look.

A long black coat over the silky blue Carolyn dress is a sophisticated look.
As you can see, the Carolyn dress is a great transitional piece in any or all 3 colours. You can wear it now with layers to get you through the spring thaw. Then once things heat up, you’ve got a lovely breathable sundress that can be worn 2 ways. And, the best part, it has hidden pockets.
If you like the B+W look, I still have black Lynne leggings in Size 1(S) and one Size 4(XL) left at 60% off.
Last but not least, a limited edition of black and white Maxine reversible tank tops are on their way. Keep your eye out on Facebook or Instagram, or better yet sign up for my Keeping Abreast newsletter so you won’t miss out. I’m only bringing in a small batch collection. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.
Happy Easter everyone!
Until next week,
